Hungarian Goulash

2 lbs beef or veal round steak, cut into ½ inch cubes
¼ cup shortening
1 cup onion, chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
¼ cup flour
3 tsp paprika
1 tsp salt
¼ tsp pepper
¼ tsp crushed thyme
2 bay leaves
1 can (28oz) tomatoes
1 cup sour cream
Hot buttered noodles

In large skillet, brown beef in hot shortening
Reduce heat, add onion & garlic
Cook until onion tender
Blend flour, paprika, salt, pepper, thyme, & bay leaves and stir into meat
Add tomatoes
Cover and simmer, stirring occasionally until meat is tender, about 1 to 1¼ hours
Stir often toward end of cooking
Stir in sour cream before serving, and serve at once over hot buttered noodles
